Danny is organizing the Brighter Future contingent for the next London 10K run

The London 10K run is on Sunday 10th July at 9.30am. Danny is hoping that we can raise an even bigger team this year. Do contact him if you would like to ‘Run for Brighter Future’ on 07731 191858 or 01233 611281
Several of our lady runners have run 10K in under an hour. If you are really unfit you can walk it in 3 hours! We will pay your entry ticket and Brighter Future will put your sponsorship money to good use in India. There’s a beer at the end if you are interested!
To date Ben, Chris, Carl . Farni, Mark, Peter, Mark G, John, Danny, Graham, Steve and David have offered to run for us and girls Kara, Kelly.,Ami, Sophie and Anjali.

Meanwhile, Glyn Paskin is going for the BIG ONE - the real LONDON Marathon on 17 April.

Glyn wants to raise £1000 for Brighter Future. He is 36 and has three children. He has done several shorter runs and has applied three times to run the marathon. His persistence is rewarded and he has been allowed a place this year. Glyn’s advice to all runners is to invest in good socks and trainers – he says he is on his 3rd pair of trainers, not because they have worn out, but because they caused injuries.

Glyn started training in October and says that every weekend involves at least one 16 mile run which takes 2.5 hours, so you can imagine how much his training eats into his free time with the family. Thank you Glyn for this sacrifice alone. We will be glued to the box and I’m sure lots of readers will support you.

Other sporting events by our supporters!

Katy is doing the great mile swim again! Support her www.justgivng.com/Katy-GoldstrawO
Last year Katy raised and did the swim and training when her baby Finley was only a few months old.It must be even harder to leave him these days.

Maggie Wood has offered to cycle to work and back, come rain or shine and it's a 40 minute journey. Thanks Maggie - great idea as it should benefit us both!

Isobel got her work colleagues and friends to sponsor her for a 5K run and raised £1000 for us. We used this money to pay the £785 bill for registering the Prem Nivas School with the government, £200 for the Prem Nivas picnic, and £96 towards the ‘Bundles of Love’ Christmas gifts of saris and shirt piece and extra food for Bapuji Leprosy Colony residents.

DMC HOUSE anniversary

February 26th was the day that DMC house was opened in 2006. DMC House was named in memory of Dorothy May C…. by her husband who was largely responsible for Brighter Future being able to buy the building to be a permanent home for children. There are now 46 children living in DMC house and 29 senior boys have moved into separate accommodation.

Children, staff and trustees marked the day with prayers ,speeches, songs and dances and drawing pictures A special meal was served to all in the evening. A huge cake with the words “Happy 5th Birthday D M C House’ was served at snacks time.

Maggie was the first volunteer to come to Prem Nivas in October 2006 and is still fondly remembered by the older children and by Chinna the little boy she sponsored and gave her birthday to. Maggie was instrumental in raising funds at her school to buy our first vehicle , which was a godsend to take the HIV+ children to hospital for their medical checkups . It has now clocked up a lot of miles and suffered from the bad roads and once again Maggie has come to the rescue by introducing us to the the family of Alistair Thompson who have given £2500 towards a new or second hand replacement vehicle. It will be named as donated in memory their late father Ian Thompson.

Jyothi Bhavan opening ceremony

The opening ceremony on 30 January was a quiet affair, celebrated with prayers and thanks for the sponsors who have made it possible to offer a home to 40 HIV+ orphan children in Vizianagaram. The children sang songs and danced and were given a special lunch.

Another new home for HIV+ children

We need to expand our accommodation for HIV+ children in Vizianagaram rural district and have this week negotiated to buy a piece of land to build a new home and hospice for 40 children. The separate hospice block would also be able to take a few children and mothers for respite care.
The site was a mango orchard and is half way between Prem Nivas and our Vizianagaram base so that it should be easy to supervise. The first requirement is to find water so we have employed a water surveyor who has selected a couple of likely sites for drinking water. The drilling company will then drill the marked sites. Construction of boundary walls and levelling of the site will follow. The next stage is to raise the money for the project. The David Pickford Foundation (in memory of our Trustee David who died recently) has started the ball rolling with a donation of £6000 .We will be launching a building appeal in the near future. The estimated cost of the total project is £40,000

Prem Nivas - repairs, improvements, spring cleaning and mumps!

This past month we had to repair the washing machine, food grinder, bikes, a cooler and a computer at Prem Nivas. On the positive side we have been able to use donations to provide AC in one of the buildings where the children sleep. And mattresses are on order.

Prem Nivas children are catching mumps, 14 so far, but none of them is too ill with it and they can do some school work in the ward.

The plants near the school have grown well, thanks to the watering rota the children have.

New Homes for Leprosy PatieMarch also marked the completion of several homes for leprosy patients in a joint venture between The Leprosy Mission and the Andhra Pradesh government. All the negotiations and daily organisation and supervision of the building was done by Brighter Future at the three separate sites. We have become very experienced at building these houses since our first ground breaking endeavours at Bapuji Colony in 2007/8.
