Rainbow Children's Home at DMC House

Rainbow Children's Home was Brighter Future's first project.

It was opened in 2004 to offer the children of leprosy sufferers, orphans, homeless children found begging on railway stations and others in need, a secure home among loving carers.

Brighter Future engaged a house mother and a cook. We rented private houses but as the leases ran out, we often had to change home and sometimes change school – unsettling for young children.

They had to learn how to live together. Next, we engaged a tutor to teach them basic letters and numbers and how to write their names. We soon had thirteen children in our care and the numbers grew every month.

These children are from leprosy colonies and they knew only begging with their parents or were left with relations or friends, while the parents went to far off towns to get more money. Until Brighter Future intervened, most had never been to school.

DMC House

In 2005 we launched an appeal to buy a large building as a permanent home for the Rainbow Children.

That year, a benefactor who has supported Manya’s charity work with polio and blind children since 1999, topped up the £5000 we had raised and enabled us to buy a large building in Vizianagaram for the children.

It was named DMC House, in memory of his wife, and in 2006 the children were moved into this permanent home.

Four of the shops on the road frontage are let to provide an income to help pay the utility bills.

At present, DMC House is home for 60 children.

Through Brighter Future, these children now go to private schools. They have private tuition, too.

They are taken on outings and can invite their school friends back for tea.

They are learning how to be like other children.

All the children have Post Office Savings books in which to save their pocket money and birthday and Christmas gifts sent by their sponsors.

Outings are provided for the children, where funds allow. They enjoyed this trip to the seaside. This was the first time they had seen the sea!

It costs £15 a month to sponsor a child at the Rainbow Children's Home.

It costs just £3 a month for younger children and £6 for the older ones, for school uniform, books, exam fees, admission fees and tuition.

Please help Brighter Future to continue helping these children. Donations large or small, regular or one-off, will help us continue with this invaluable work.
