Prem
Nivas Home and Hospice for HIV/AIDS orphans |
|
|
Prem
Nivas is Brighter
Future's first project for HIV-infected
children.
The need for a home for AIDS orphans
was perceived during 2006.
The fund-raising began in 2006,
then came the search for a property. A building was found about
24km from the town of Vizianagaram. It is in a rural area, on
the edge of a village, adjacent to a housing estate and a rice
mill.
There are fields on two sides, and
plenty of shade-giving trees.
|
|

The property
was found in 2006
|
|
|
Once the building was chosen and bought, alterations and improvements
were begun in May 2006, and equipment was selected.
Bricks and tiles were recycled where possible and traditional
touches, such as thatched roofs and yellow door decorations on
the threshold, were added. |
|
|
A lot of work was done in a very short time.
We only obtained the gas permit the night before we'd invited
the children to come and stay with us on 1 October!
Our official Opening Day was on 2 October, which
coincided with the national celebrations of Gandhi's birthday.

Prem Nivas
- which means Loving Home - is shown here with Manya, volunteer
John and some of our children.
By providing hygienic conditions, nutritious food, vitamins,
supplements and prophylaxis, we can lessen the chance of these
children developing full blown AIDS.
Anti Retroviral Treatment is now available for children in India.
We take our children for regular testing to Vizianagaram. As the
treatment is severely rationed, only the sickest children are
treated.
We now have 46 children at Prem
Nivas.

| Prem Nivas was the first part
of Brighter Future's three-phase strategy to address the HIV/AIDS
problem.
Later, we would provide food and medicines to
people suffering from HIV/AIDS in the rural villages.
The third phase was to enable patients to have
an income, through training or by giving micro-finance, so that
they can set up little businesses to support themselves and their
families. |
|

|
To support a child at Prem Nivas costs
just £23 a month which includes medicines and education.
Please help us to go on supporting these vulnerable children and
giving them a chance of a happy childhood.
