Bapuji Leprosy Colony

The housing situation at Bapuji Colony

There has been no maintenance in the 20 years since the concrete-roofed houses were built.

Reinforcing rods inside the concrete had rotted and chunks of concrete fell from the ceilings and wall.

Water penetrated the concrete layers of the roofs and poured into every house.

Cracks appeared in all the walls.

The houses had no electricity supply and no running water and no toilets.

The best - the only - solution was to rebuild, as the original buildings were beyond repair and are dangerous. We believe that three blocks of terraced houses would be the most affordable form of construction.

We raised £6000 through appeals and the £15000 remainder was donated by The Leprosy Mission, matched by Local Government grants.

This would provide one house for each resident, plus one for emergencies or the use of guests. Two further rooms would provide a treatment room and a kitchen/store house to provide the residents with two meals a day under the summer feeding programme.

Stock proof fencing would allow the gardening project to be restarted.
